Ricordea Florida

Ricordea florida strictly speaking are actually a type anenome from the Corallimorpharian familly, although in the aquarium industry they are refered to and treated as corals so that is what we will refer to them on our site, they are indigenous to the waters off florida and the caribean where they are collected in depths of around 20 feet.

Ricordea florida corals are covered in thousands of tiny polyps, it is the mass of these hundreds of polyps which give the coral its unique and amazing beauty, no two examples are ever exactly the same, ricordeas come in a a huge range of colours, from illuminous neon green, to bright orange and stunning blues with every possible shade inbetween. If you are lucky enough you may also find the rarer colours, namely yellow/golds, purples and even hot pinks, you also then have the rainbow colour ricordeas which are a beautilfull mixture of various colours, these look trully amazing, especially under moonlight type lighting, RicordeasUK are working hard to farm the more hard to get colours, making them available to more UK reefers.

Ricordeas can and do change colour in there natural enviroment, these changes take place at the change of the seasons when the waters warms and cools, from our experience its extremely unlikely to see any major colour changes if any at all under aquarium conditions (insert colour change pic)
Ricordeas can grow upto around 6-7cm and can develop upto 7 mouths although they usually split before reaching this size, the mouths gradually move apart from each other untill the ricordea splits to form a new coral, although this process isnt quick, a ricordea will given enough time spread to cover the whole rock it is growing on.
Ricordea florida will live in harmony with any other coral, they are fine to be touching other ricordea floridas and actually seem love being in close contact with each other but as with all corals dont allow different species to touch each other.

Ricordeas do not sting although it is recomended to always wear gloves when handling any type of coral, coral mucus has one of the highest density of bacteria of any known substance.
For more information on the care of the Ricordea Floridas please see our ricordea care pages. (insert link)
